Spiritual Bulking

Growing Stronger Through the Obedience Christ Purchased

“Spiritual bulking is not the absence of falls — it is the refusal to remain fallen.”

Hugh Lawson Robinson · Coming early 2027

What is Spiritual Bulking?

As physical muscles grow through repeated effort against resistance — not through ease or privilege — spiritual muscles grow through repeated obedience when it would be easier to stop. This is spiritual bulking.

Written on various battlefields where folly, mistakes, and deep mess-ups met mercy, Spiritual Bulking is not a book for the near-perfect. It is for those who still wrestle with the darkness pressing too close.

Across eleven chapters — covering forgiveness, witness, the Word, faith and trust, the Holy Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit, self-denial, thanksgiving, prayer, biblical examples, and the final call — the author draws on lived experience, Scripture, and hard-won grace to show what it looks like to grow stronger through the obedience Christ purchased.

Who it is for

Believers seeking deeper spiritual maturity. Readers navigating personal failure, grief, or stagnation. Anyone who has ever said, I want to grow — but I keep falling.

What it will do

Return you to the altar. Reframe your failures as training. Show you what grace looks like when it refuses to give up on you.

What Early Readers Are Saying

The idea behind Spiritual Bulking is excellent. I love the way you compare gym training and building physical muscle with becoming spiritually stronger.

I am envious of your writing style — the language is clear and your use of metaphors are incredible.

“The world needs more people like you.”

The scene in the office when your colleagues suggest you have been ‘bulking’ is by far the stand out moment. You have assumed a natural spiritual vernacular which doesn’t seem affected or forced.

“Congratulations on writing a book with such depth and originality.”

This book has resonated with me.

“Everyone deserves to read this book. The tone is welcoming, and it does nudge the urge to reflect, ponder, and accept. I am definitely going to use it as a guide.”

From the start the prose is fluent and easily read. The forgiveness chapter is very emotional and clings to the heart.

“The closing prayer is elegant and yet conveys a direct message… Give it to publish.”

I love it.

It hit me in my chest when you spoke about me in the weight of self-forgiveness.

“Pure facts.”

Very reflective and thoughtful. Poignant and practical — it kind of hits the nail on the head and it’s real.

“Those readings always resonate with me.”

Hugh Lawson Robinson

Hugh Lawson Robinson is a Jamaican-British author, educator, and Christian whose writing is built entirely from lived experience. He grew up in the inner city of Jamaica, found faith through the persistent invitation of an elderly woman named Sister Daley, and has spent the decades since learning — often the hard way — what obedience actually costs.

He has taught in Jamaica, England, and Dubai. He has conducted Bible studies in communities where the light was thin and the hope thinner. He has been a mall evangelist, a Sabbath School intercessor, and a man who once returned stolen library books weeks after his baptism because the Word said to.

“I wrote while playing too close to the riverbank with my salvation, knowing I needed rescue.”

Spiritual Bulking was written, as he says, “on various battlefields — where folly, mistakes, and deep mess-ups met mercy.” It is not a book about having arrived. It is a book about refusing to stop walking.
